Every year, taxpayers in the United States have until April 15 to file their tax return or file an extension. Normally, the only exception is if April 15 falls on a Saturday, Sunday or national holiday. This year taxpayers get will an extra three days to file their 2010 tax returns due to a Washington  D.C. holiday. Emancipation Day day in 2011 falls on Saturday, April 16. However, this Washington D.C. holiday will be observed on April 15, 2011. According to the IRS, “District of Columbia holidays impact tax deadlines in the same way that federal holidays do; therefore, all taxpayers will have three extra days to file this year.” It’s also important to note that the tax deadline for taxpayers who file an extension for their 2010 tax returns will be pushed back to October 17, due to October 15 falling on a Saturday.
