IRS and state tax agencies recently issued a warning to taxpayers about a new scam being sent by text message, this time posing as a link for receiving an economic impact payment.

The text message reads “You have received a direct deposit of $1,200 from COVID-19 TREAS FUND. Further action is required to accept this payment into your account. Continue here to accept this payment” and it includes a link to a fake website that steals your information.

The IRS and state tax departments want to remind taxpayers that they never send texts requesting bank account information. If you receive this scam message, you should take a screenshot and send it to phishing@irs.gov with the following information:

  • Date/Time/Timezone that they received the text message
  • The number that appeared on their Caller ID
  • The number that received the text message

If you need information on the Economic Impact Payment, visit irs.gov directly.
