The IRS is giving those affected by Hurricane Harvey a little extra time to complete tax filing if an extension was filed for the 2016 tax return. The new tax deadline for is January 31, 2018 for the 2016 Individual Income Tax Returns (Original Deadline October 15, 2017). Texas counties eligible for this extended deadline include: Aransas, Bee, Brazoria, Calhoun, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Goliad, Harris, Jackson, Kleberg, Liberty, Matagorda, Nueces, Refugio, San Patricio, Victoria and Wharton.
These extended deadline also affect estimated payments for those in the affect region. The 2017 estimated payments due on September 15, 2017 and January 15, 2018 are now both due on January 31, 2018.
The IRS automatically provides filing and penalty relief to any taxpayer with an IRS address of record located in the disaster area. Thus, taxpayers need not contact the IRS to get this relief. However, if an affected taxpayer receives a late filing or late payment penalty notice from the IRS that has an original or extended filing, payment or deposit due date falling within the postponement period, the taxpayer should call the number on the notice to have the penalty abated.
