Page 8: Investment Income and Brokerage Accounts

Skip this page if you have no bank interest, no dividends, no brokerage account and no digital assets.

You need this page if you received any 1099-INT, 1099-DIV or 1099-B, hold an investment account, or bought, sold or received cryptocurrency. Even a few dollars of bank interest belongs here.

What this page does. It lists your interest, your dividend accounts and your brokerage accounts, and asks the digital asset question the IRS puts at the top of every return. For dividends and securities you are listing the accounts, not the figures — we take the numbers from the statements you upload.

Before You Begin

Please gather the following documents before completing this page:

  • All Forms 1099-INT (Interest Income)
  • All Forms 1099-DIV (Dividend Income)
  • All Forms 1099-B (Investment Sales)
  • Consolidated brokerage statements
  • Cryptocurrency or digital asset transaction records, if applicable

Be sure to include accounts that earned only a small amount of income during the year.

Completing the Interest Income Section

No Interest Income?

If you did not receive any interest income during the year, simply check the box indicating no interest income and leave the table blank.

If You Received Interest Income

Complete one row for each account or payer.

For each entry, provide:

  • Taxpayer, Spouse, or Joint ownership
  • Name of the bank, credit union, or financial institution
  • Interest amount received

Examples include:

  • Savings accounts
  • Checking accounts
  • Certificates of Deposit (CDs)
  • Money market accounts
  • Treasury securities
  • Credit union accounts

The organizer will automatically calculate the total interest income reported.

Completing the Dividend Section

No Dividend Income?

If you did not receive any dividends during the year, check the box provided and move on to the next section.

If You Received Dividend Income

For each account, provide:

  • Taxpayer, Spouse, or Joint ownership
  • Fund name, brokerage account, or company name
  • Account number

Important

You do not need to enter dividend amounts on this page.

Instead, please upload:

  • Form 1099-DIV, or
  • Your consolidated brokerage statement

These documents contain the detailed information required to properly report your dividends.

Completing the Securities Sold Section

No Investment Sales?

If you did not sell any stocks, mutual funds, ETFs, bonds, or other investments during the year, and did not receive a brokerage statement reporting sales, simply check the box provided.

If You Sold Investments

For each brokerage account, provide:

  • Taxpayer, Spouse, or Joint ownership
  • Brokerage firm name
  • Account number

Please also upload the complete brokerage statement.

Include All Pages

The full statement is important because it typically contains:

  • Sale proceeds
  • Cost basis information
  • Realized gains and losses
  • Wash sale adjustments
  • Transaction details

Providing all pages helps ensure that gains and losses are reported accurately.

Digital Assets (Cryptocurrency)

The IRS requires all taxpayers to answer a digital asset question each year.

Answer Yes if, during the year, you:

  • Sold cryptocurrency
  • Exchanged one digital asset for another
  • Received cryptocurrency as compensation
  • Received digital assets through mining, staking, rewards, or similar activities
  • Disposed of a digital asset in any way

You may answer No if you only:

  • Held digital assets throughout the year
  • Purchased digital assets with cash and did nothing else
  • Transferred assets between wallets or accounts that you personally owned

If you are unsure about how to answer this question, simply make a note in the comments section and we will review it with you.

Comments Section

Use the comments area for anything that may require additional explanation, including:

  • Tax-exempt interest
  • Additional accounts that would not fit in the tables
  • Sales reported without a Form 1099-B
  • Corrections or changes received after year-end
  • Any unusual investment activity

The more information you provide, the easier it is for us to ensure everything is reported correctly.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Small Amounts Still Need to Be Reported

Even if a bank or financial institution did not issue a tax form because the amount was small, the income may still need to be reported.

Please include all interest income, regardless of the amount.

Properly Identify Joint Accounts

If an account is owned jointly, select Joint rather than choosing only one spouse.

This helps ensure income is allocated correctly and can be particularly important when multiple states are involved or separate returns are filed.

The Supporting Statement Is Essential

For dividends and investment sales, the uploaded statement is often more important than the information entered in the table.

The organizer tells us which accounts to expect, but the statement provides the detailed tax reporting information we need.

Please be sure to upload all supporting documents.

Include the Entire Brokerage Statement

A summary page alone is often not enough.

Please upload every page available, including:

  • Cost basis details
  • Realized gain and loss reports
  • Supplemental tax information
  • Transaction summaries

Complete information helps prevent delays and follow-up requests.

Tax-Exempt Interest Still Matters

Interest earned from municipal bonds or other tax-exempt investments may still need to be reported on your tax return.

In addition, some states tax certain types of tax-exempt interest even when the federal government does not.

If you received tax-exempt interest, please note it in the comments section and provide the applicable statements.

Watch for Corrected Tax Forms

Brokerage firms occasionally issue corrected Forms 1099 after the original statements are released.

If you receive a corrected statement after submitting your organizer, simply send it to us as soon as possible so we can update your return if needed.

When You’re Finished

Before moving on to the next page, take a few moments to confirm that you have:

✓ Listed all interest accounts

✓ Listed all dividend-paying accounts

✓ Listed all brokerage accounts with investment sales

✓ Answered the digital asset question

✓ Uploaded all applicable tax documents and statements

✓ Included notes for anything unusual or unclear

A complete Page 8 helps us ensure that all investment income is reported accurately and that no important tax documents are overlooked. If you’re uncertain whether an account, statement, or transaction should be included, please provide the information and we’ll be happy to review it with you.
