WHAT THIS PAGE DOESTells us how you want a refund paid or a balance settled, for the IRS and your state separately, and carries your electronic signature.
HAVE READYA check or bank statement for your routing and account numbers.
You’re almost done. A missing signature here is one of the most common reasons organizers are delayed.
1 · Before you begin
Have one of these ready for your routing and account numbers.
2 · Completing the page
Work from the top of the organizer page to the bottom. Each section below matches a section on the page.
1Refund optionsFederal and state can differ
Choose for eachPaper check; direct deposit (usually fastest and most secure); apply part of the refund to next year’s first estimated payment; or apply the whole refund to next year. You can choose differently for federal and state.
Direct deposit detailsName(s) on the account, bank name, routing number, account number and confirmation, checking or savings, and whether it’s joint. Enter it exactly as your bank shows it.
2Balance due optionsHow you’ll pay what you owe
Choose for eachPay it yourself; direct debit from your bank account; or an installment agreement if you can’t pay in full.
Same accountYou can reuse the refund account so you don’t have to retype it.
Payment dateFor direct debit, pick the date. If none is chosen, it’s generally scheduled for the filing deadline. Choose a date when the money will be there.
Installment agreementThe monthly amount you can reasonably pay and your preferred date. The IRS generally allows the 1st through the 28th.
3Authorization and signatureRequired to file
Authorization boxesCheck every required box. They confirm your filing and payment instructions.
Sign electronicallyType your full legal name and the date. If filing jointly, both spouses sign and date.
3 · Common mistakes that cause delays
The issues we see most often on this page.
Not signingAn unsigned Page 25 is the most common reason we can’t move forward.
Someone else’s accountRefunds generally must go to an account owned by you or your spouse.
Typing numbers from memoryCopy them from a check, statement or online banking. One wrong digit delays a refund.
Using your debit card numberThe number on your card isn’t your account number.
Expecting debit on filing dayFunds are withdrawn on the date you choose.
Installment date after the 28thPick a date from the 1st to the 28th.
Expecting the full refundRefunds can be applied to past-due taxes or certain other government debts first.
Forgetting interest on a planInterest and penalties can keep building on an installment balance. Paying more up front helps.
4 · When you’re finished
- Federal and state refund options chosen and bank details checked.
- Balance-due choices and any installment details entered.
- All authorization boxes checked; signed and dated by you, and your spouse if filing jointly.
- Continue to Page 26.
